11/19/2015 GMO salmon cleared for human consumption. The AquaBounty frankensalmon I told you about received clearing by federal regulation. Shares went up 6.4 %. Cynical. No labelling required.

Avoid these GMO Foods

After chatting with someone yesterday who was under the impression that he is not taking in any foods that contain genetically modified organisms, I decided to publish a quick list.

This list of GMO foods to avoid is for the United States of America. With a great amount of help from Monsanto, America is the leading GMO country and the list does not necessarily apply to other countries with stricter GMO laws.

GMO DANGER - Foods to avoid

Introduced into the market in 1994, companies are not required to label GMO in the United States. If you want to change that please visit the site of the Organic Consumers Association.

Bill Freese of the Center of Food Safety stated that 60-70 % of the foods in US supermarkets contain GMO.

“Natural” foods that contain any ingredients from the lists below are not safe to be GMO-free.

Unless you buy foods labeled as organic you have a high chance that these foods and ingredients are GMO:

GMO Fruits and Veggies

  • Soy
  • Canola
  • Nu-Mex Jalmundo (a plus sized, mild jalapeno variation optimised for jalapeno poppers)
  • Papaya
  • Alfalfa
  • Sugar Beets
  • Zucchini/Yellow Squash

New threats

The first genetically modified potato was brought to market by Monsanto in 1995. Pressure from consumers forced fast food chains like McDonalds to ask their producers to stop using it. But a new Frankenstein potato might make its way on your plate.
Recently, the FDA approved the following non-browning apples and GMO potatoes and we might see more of those in the future:
  • “Innate” potatoes
  • Granny Smith apples (might be marked “arctic” apple)
  • Golden Delicious (might be marked “arctic” apple)
Below is a list of approved variations.

GMO Meat and Fish

As of today to my knowledge neither fish nor meat contains GMO. That said a lot of the meat we find in grocery stories is from animals that have been fed genetically modified organisms.
AcquaBounty, a Massachusetts-based biotech firm, is working with the FDA since 1994 to get their GE Salmon approved. Have an eye out for that one.

GMO Dairy

40 % or more of our dairy products like ice cream, cheese) contain the GE hormone rGBH (recombinant bovine growth hormone). It is banned for human consumption throughout Europe and in Canada, New Zealand, and Australia.
In the US, it is allowed. Look out for the “rGBH-free” or “non-GMO” label.

GMO Additives

  • Amino Acids
  • Aspartame
  • Ascorbic Acid
  • Sodium Ascorbate
  • Artificial Vitamin C
  • Citrid Acid
  • Sodium Citrate
  • Ethanol
  • Flavorings (artificial AND natural. Be ware of “seasoning mix”)
  • High-Fructose Corn Syrup
  • Hydrolyzed Vegetable Protein
  • Lactic Acid
  • Maltodextrin
  • Molasses
  • Monosodium Glutamate
  • Sucrose
  • Textured Vegetable Protein
  • Xanthan Gum
  • Yeast
Did you notice the many kinds of sugar on this list? And MSG? If you needed another reason to stay clear – here it is.

GMO Cotton

Not a food but still good to know. Around 68 % of the worldwide cotton production is impacted. 25 million hectares worldwide in 2013. Read more below:

GMO Companies

There is Monsanto, Monsanto, Monsanto and some others. Actually, Monsanto and Syngenta are the biggest players in the GMO market. These are the applicants for 33 modified varieties:
  • Monsanto
  • Dow
  • Bayer/Genective
  • Pioneer
  • Syngenta
  • Stine Seed
  • Mycogen c/o Dow & Pioneer
  • AgrEvo
  • DeKalb
  • Northrup King
  • Plant Genetic Systems
  • Ciba Seeds
Once more the conclusion is that it is safest to buy unprocessed organic food. A list of safe restaurants will follow, sign up to my newsletter to be the first to know HERE
